Duty, Destiny, is there a difference?

This week we are to reflect on what are your duties, and just how do you know that they are your duties? Do you have a list of chores that need done? Were you told you have to do them or if you don't do them there are dire consequences for dereliction of duty? Perhaps there is no clean underwear, as the laundry fairy that you thought existed has declined to come to your dwelling any longer. Talk about pissing off fate!

All joking aside, we all have tasks we must perform. Are they a duty and to whom do you owe that duty to? We had a benchmark due this week, did you study? Why or why not? Isn't it our duty to perform the best we can on such things? I believe that in the end it comes down to personal responsibility. Someone you know may be paying for your college, or you are working your way through it with no help; either way it is for you to take the task in hand and study. Not for anyone else, but for yourself. You are the one who will ultimately profit from your task. Even if it is simply just a pair of clean underwear.

At what point, though does duty then morph into destiny? A social calling if you will. These last five weeks, I was honored to be included in the Poder program through ASU. I have known for the last three years that I am going to open a roasterie, hire a few people from my husband's program, and have worked diligently on my business plan. Here is the kicker, my husband wants to help non-violent drug offenders and the plan was for him to open a transitional housing. I would supply them with some job skills to help them return to society.

Big change in plans. He has been moved to try and get into the prisons to provide treatment there. My new destiny has morphed into not only having the roasterie, but opening a non-profit. I had pitched my business idea to other businesses and they wanted to help, also. We will be working hopefully with communication, behavioral health, and psychology students to help give them the life skills to transition from prison to society. This will give the students real life experience internships. We also will get grants to open the transitional housing and will partner with research teams through the colleges to develop better treatments. Socially, we plan to partner with other small businesses to expand our pool of job skills. Truthfully, we cannot wait for government to do anything. As a society, we can impact and change the overcrowding of prisons.

To answer the question, duty becomes destiny when you have an idea that can change peoples lives and impact your community. How do I know that? When that project just keeps growing and it keeps you up at night, you no longer have a duty, it is now a social responsibility.

Right now you may just have duties and no clue on what you want to do. That is fine, explore the world and see what really matters to you. Don't neglect your duties, as they teach us something about ourselves. We all have something we can contribute to this world. Duties contribute to your small piece of it and help you to get ready for what will really make your life amazing.

  1. I like how you bring up the fact that all of us must consider our duty to be to ourself and our education. I found this to be striking in your blog post because I know I personally value striving to do my best and succeed. But for others they do not consider school to be their top priority and therefore it’s not considered their duty. I also liked that you find your duty to be serving the community. You’re doing an amazing thing helping out with such a large cause, but I do believe others have differing duties. I find it crucial that we, as a society, help and support each other. But each person have differing personalities, skills, and passions and it’s when they can use all those that someone finds their duty.

    1. Thank you Kimberly, I do think that we each have our own thing to do, also. It would not be helpful to all work on the same thing. We can all do what we see needs done, and in that accomplish a great deal to help society. I agree that is why we all have these different abilities and skills. I think that when we all do exactly what we know we can accomplish and contribute to helping others along the way, we will all have a better society. I appreciate your input!
